Do your homework
Always remember to do your research.
Like all hobbies, if the necessary time and attention
is not given to practice, then a desirable level of
competence will never be achieved. If one of your hobbies
is working on cars, then at some point it will become
necessary to study some mechanics. If your hobby is
gardening, you will need to spend some time caring and
tending to your plants in the correct manner. The point
is, with all hobbies it takes time to develop a certain
level of competence. Competitions and contests are no
exceptions.
A good example of the importance and simplicity involved
in homework is highlighted by the recent estimate that
around 25-30% of all competition and sweepstake entries
are void simply by the fact that the entrant failed
to comply with the rules. In effect, the contestant
who considered small but vital pieces of information
such as ‘ are you allowed to enter more than once,’
has already increased their chances of winning by half.
What can be worse than knowing hat the winning entry
that you just spent three hours putting together is
invalid because you failed to include your date of birth
or something equally inane. ALWAYS READ THE RULES.
