Radio contests
Radio phone-in contests are still among
of the most popular forms of competition. They take
a variety of format – some will involve sending
an SMS with the correct answer, but most will involve
phoning up and then answering questions, playing some
sort of game, or generally providing entertainment to
listeners in some form or another.
The first thing you’ll need to do of course,
is listen regularly to radio stations which have competitions,
which most of them do. Of course, you are better off
choosing a station whose competitions generally have
prizes that you’d like to win.
The biggest hurdle to success in this sort of competition
is actually getting through. It’s not necessarily
the first caller that gets to enter (though where it
is, a fast redial function can be very useful) –
sometimes the entry might be for the 100th caller or
something similar.
Where it is a first past the post system, you are more
likely to get through the less popular the station is,
and at a time when fewer people are likely to be listening.
It’s usually easier to compete at anything when
the field is smaller.
Some radio stations only get their ratings measured
at certain points in the week, month or year. If you
can find out when these periods are (you should be able
to get this information from the station itself) then
you can ensure you are listening at the right time –
the station will use competitions and giveaways more
heavily during these periods to sustain the audience
level.
Once you’re on the show, be prepared for whatever
it is that you need to do. If it’s a trivia quiz,
be prepared, if it’s questions on a particular
subject, be prepared, if you need to say a specific
thing, be prepared. There’s really no point going
to the hassle of phoning up if you’re not going
to have a strong chance of winning if you do get through.
